Inspired by a search for texture and autonomous forms, combined with an interest in the brain’s recognition of symmetry and pattern, Langley’s compositions aim to subtly play with our perception. A sense of shifting environmental space is created through his work’s suggestive abstract format, aided by the immense scale of his print and film. Working mainly digitally from film and photographs shot on location, an often vivid and heavily contrasted colour pallette is represented alongside strong elements of symmetry balanced against subtle use of asymmetry. One of the key themes throughout Langley’s motion work is creating a sense of total immersion, with sound playing an essential part. Collaborating with both local and international music producers, Langley employs rich soundscapes to build atmosphere and drive the narrative of these pieces.
